Gums recede for a variety of reasons, including periodontal disease, physical trauma
(brushing too hard, too often or with a hard brush), tooth position and aging. When
gum recession is severe, the root of the tooth will be exposed, making it sensitive
to hot or cold, prone to decay and aesthetically unattractive.
Soft-tissue grafts cover the exposed root to prevent further recession, stop the
sensitivity and improve the appearance of the tooth. In some people, gums are naturally
very thin, increasing the likelihood of recession. In these cases, a soft-tissue
graft will prevent future problems.
