Acid erosion of tooth enamel causes tooth decay and cavities, which dentists call
dental caries. Bacteria in the mouth accumulate, along with saliva, food particles
and other substances, on the surface of teeth in a sticky film called plaque.
Plaque forms readily in cracks, pits or fissures in the back teeth; between teeth;
around dental fillings and bridgework; and near the gum line. Some plaque bacteria
convert sugar and carbohydrates from food into acids. These dissolve minerals in
the surface of the teeth, forming microscopic pits or erosions that grow over time.
